I loved reading this so much and I find it very relatable, especially that last paragraph. You write beautifully about hard things. I am so glad I discovered your writing.

I found the music I related to before I found the friends, too. I still find myself being seen by bands like Fiddlehead, the perfect soundtrack for the middle-aged dad who's depressed but not ready to give up. The songs on Death is Nothing to Us are the adult version of Sad Boys Por Vida. Nice way to start the week, given how lonely I'm feeling a lot of the time these days.

I have been on a big Violent Femmes kick lately! Dug that first record out and listened to it a lot while I was working on my latest zine. For me it was that 1-2 punch of Please Do Not Go into Add It Up that just perfectly encapsulates my high school years...that swirl of lonely/horny/angry/frustrated but also goofy and sarcastic...

I once loudly- and publicly!- serenaded this girl I had a crush on (and stood ZERO chance with) with Please Do Not Go, much to her complete confusion (she was a total normie and had no idea who the Violent Femmes even were...). It was like the scene in Pretty In Pink where Duckie sings Try A Little Tenderness but about 100 times more pathetic! 🫣😆
